Call for Panelists for the
2012 Southeast/Southwest People of Color Scholarship Conference
Transformative Advocacy, Scholarship, and Praxis: Taking Our Pulse
March 29-April 1, 2012

The 2012 Southeast/Southwest People of Color Scholarship Conference will take place in
Birmingham, Alabama. Throughout the globe, Birmingham resonates as the epicenter of the
modern civil rights movement for racial equality and justice. Hosting the 2012 meeting of the
SE/SW People of Color Scholarship Conference offers a unique opportunity to evaluate critically
our present state of effectuating substantive legal, political, social, and economic transformation
thorough advocacy, scholarship and praxis. The SE/SW People of Color Scholarship Conference
issues this call for panelists who will offer valuable perspectives on the ways in which we might
assess our efficacy in the above areas in scholarship, advocacy and praxis.
The Conference has three primary tracks which will include panels that elaborate on the broader
thematic tracks. The tracks are: (1) Addressing Challenges in and to the Legal Academy; (2)
Forging and Responding to Change in Our Communities; and (3) Actualizing Social and Economic
Justice. The panels are:
Track I: Addressing Challenges in and to the Legal Academy
• With or Without Tenure: Institutional Challenges and Hierarchies
• Taking Our Pulse: Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Legal Academy
Track II: Forging and Responding to Change in Our Communities
• Immigration Law and Policy
• International Law and Human Rights
• Intersection and Divergence of Interests: Coalition Building among People of Color
Communities
Track III: Actualizing Social and Economic Justice
• Is Homeownership for White People? Interrogating the “American Dream”
• Race and Bioethics
• Race, Culture, and Intellectual Property
To be considered as a panelist, please submit a statement of interest (1-2 paragraph
description of your presentation is sufficient) to Professor Charlton Copeland,
University of Miami Law School, via email at ccopeland@law.miami.edu by Monday,
February 6, 2012. Panelists will be selected by February 13th.
All panelists will be responsible for paying their Conference registration fee and travel expenses.
